An established American sales tradition holding that the relationship precedes the transaction and outlasts it. Entire sales organisations are structured around it — account managers who keep the same clients for years, whose job description is the relationship itself.

Advantage through technology
Vorsprung durch Technik — advantage through technology — has been in use as a German advertising line since the 1970s and passed into English untranslated. The claim is that the lead comes from the engineering, not from the marketing.
The standards body
The Deutsches Institut für Normung maintains tens of thousands of standards. DIN A4 is the famous one. Most of the rest govern things nobody outside the trade has heard of.
A standard is a problem somebody already solved, written down so that nobody solves it again. It is prevention in its most literal form: the mistake is designed out before the work begins.
The handbook disclaimer
American employee handbooks carry a standard clause: this handbook is not a contract, and the employer may change any policy at any time. The document that sets out the rules opens by saying it does not bind anyone.
One-click
Amazon patented single-click ordering in 1999 and defended the patent for two decades. Removing one step from a purchase was considered valuable enough to litigate over.
Stock options
American companies grant equity to employees well below executive level, vesting over years. The compensation is a claim on future value, and the employee’s interest is deliberately tied to the share price.
Tactical empathy
Chris Voss, formerly the FBI’s lead international kidnapping negotiator, teaches a method built on mirroring, labelling the other party’s emotions aloud, and calibrated questions. His book became a major American bestseller and his firm trains corporate negotiators. The technique is not to set emotion aside. It is to name it accurately and work with it.
The process audit
German automotive suppliers are audited on their processes, not only on their parts. VDA 6.3 assesses the manufacturing process itself and produces a score. A supplier can deliver conforming parts and still fail.
The insurer that inspects
German workplace accident insurance is carried by the Berufsgenossenschaften, trade associations organized by sector. They pay out when someone is injured.
They also write the safety rules for their sector and inspect the workplaces that fall under them.
The body that pays for the accident is the body that prevents it. The incentive is built into the structure rather than appealed to.
The Mittelstand employer
The German mid-sized company sector, much of it family-owned across generations and often the principal employer in its town. Standorttreue — loyalty to the location — is a stated value in these firms, and moving production is discussed in local newspapers as a breach of something.
