A German commonplace in engineering and quality discussion: the result is only as good as the route to it. The claim is not moral. It is that an outcome produced by an uncontrolled process cannot be relied on to recur.
The path is the goal
Der Weg ist das Ziel — the path is the goal. A German commonplace, and in a working context it is meant literally rather than as consolation.
Es kommt darauf an, wie man’s macht — it depends on how one does it. Said about outcomes that look identical.
Pfusch — botched work. A German noun for work done by the wrong method, applicable even when the result holds.
The documentation duty
German law requires documentation of the process in regulated fields — pharmaceutical manufacture, medical devices, food production, construction. What was done, by whom, when, to which specification. The record is not evidence that the work was done properly. In German regulatory logic, an undocumented step was not properly done.
Due care
Sorgfalt — care, diligence. German liability turns on whether the required care was exercised in the conduct of the work. A person who followed proper procedure and still caused harm stands differently in German law from one who caused none but skipped it.
Work owed and effort owed
German contract law distinguishes the Werkvertrag, which owes a result, from the Dienstvertrag, which owes an effort properly performed. The distinction determines liability, and it turns on whether what was promised was an outcome or a way of working.
Examining the working
German examination assesses the process as much as the answer. Apprentices are examined on practical execution before a chamber committee. Engineering students show the derivation. A right answer reached the wrong way is marked accordingly.
Protected by method
German and European law protects certain products by reference to how they are made — the Reinheitsgebot for beer, protected designations for food, process patents in chemistry. The method is part of what the thing is.
Depth of manufacture
Fertigungstiefe — a German term for how much of a product a firm makes itself, discussed as a strategic property. Control of the process is understood as control of the product.
Traceability
German manufacturing records which batch, which machine, which shift and which operator produced each item, and the requirement is written into food law, pharmaceutical law and automotive standards. The output carries its own process history.
Process capability
German manufacturing measures whether a process is statistically able to produce within tolerance, as an index, before any particular part is inspected. The question asked is not whether this piece is good. It is whether the process can produce good pieces.
