The meeting record

The German meeting record is not a list of decisions. A proper Protokoll records what was raised, what was argued, who objected and on what grounds, and then what was resolved.

It is circulated, corrected, and approved at the next meeting as its own agenda item.

Six months later the question is not only what was decided but why. The document is built to answer the second.

The four-eyes principle

Vier-Augen-Prinzip. The four-eyes principle. Two people must see and approve, independently, before something takes effect.

It is written into German banking, pharmaceutical, administrative and corporate procedure, and it has a name of its own, which tells you it is a thing people invoke rather than a practice they happen to follow.

It does not check whether the answer is right. It checks that more than one route reached it.

Pi times thumb

Pi times thumb. The German phrase for a rough estimate.

It is almost always said with a small apology attached, flagging that what follows was not properly derived. The speaker marks their own method as inadequate before anyone else can.

Sloppy

Sloppy. And the judgment is aimed at the method, not the outcome.

Schlampig gearbeitet — worked sloppily — can be said of something that came out fine. It means the result cannot be relied on, because the way it was produced would not reliably produce it again.

Craft-clean

Craft-clean. Said of a law, an article, a piece of engineering or an argument: the work was done properly.

The phrase exists because Germans need to separate two judgments that English tends to run together. A law can be politically wrong and handwerklich sauber. It can also be politically right and handwerklich schlecht, and the second is a real criticism that survives agreement with the aim.

The three quality criteria

Gütekriterien. German research methodology teaches three quality criteria in a fixed order: Objektivität, Reliabilität, Validität. Objectivity means the result does not depend on who carried out the measurement. Reliability means the instrument measures with small error. Validity means it measures the thing it was supposed to measure.

And they are taught as a chain. Objectivity is the precondition for reliability, and reliability is the precondition for validity. You cannot have the third without the first two.

Every German student who has written a thesis has had to argue all three in a methods chapter.

The duty of care

Sorgfaltspflicht. The duty of care. In German liability law, what is examined is whether the required care was exercised in the process — not only what happened as a result.

A person who followed the proper procedure and still caused harm stands differently from one who caused no harm but skipped the procedure.

The process carries legal weight in its own right.
