The Oakland Athletics, working with one of the smallest payrolls in baseball, used statistical analysis to identify undervalued players and won more games than teams spending several times as much.
The scouts hated it. The methods were unorthodox, the reasoning was unfamiliar, and it produced wins — which ended the argument.
A number carried to three decimal places, quoted from memory by ordinary fans, and applied outside baseball to anything from hiring to sales calls. The unit of judgment is what actually happened, divided by how many times you tried.
American sports put the current result in the largest object in the building, visible from every seat, updated continuously. Nobody argues with it, and there is no separate record of who played better.
From Jerry Maguire, 1996, and shouted rather than spoken. It entered American business speech immediately, because it names the moment when talk is required to convert into something countable.
The line is usually credited to Vince Lombardi, though it was first said by UCLA coach Red Sanders. Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.
It is the more absolute version of an earlier, softer sentence, and it is the absolute version that stuck.
The sentence is quoted constantly in American management and commonly attributed to Peter Drucker, though the attribution is disputed. Whatever its origin, the assumption inside it is that a thing without a number attached to it will drift.
Results-oriented. A standard phrase on an American résumé. The claim is not that the person works hard or knows the field, but that they can be judged by what came out.
Deliverables. American project language names the output as the unit of work. Not tasks, not effort, not hours. The thing handed over.
Track record. Not qualifications, not references, not what someone believes about themselves. What has already been produced, and can be pointed at.
Best practice. Methods are adopted from a competitor, another industry, another country, on the grounds that they work. There is no loyalty in the concept — the practice earns its place by outcome and loses it the same way.
Return on investment. Every expenditure becomes a candidate for the calculation, including training, meetings, research and attention. The question is not whether the thing is good. It is what came back.
The bottom line. An accounting term — the last line of the statement, where profit or loss appears — that became the general American word for the thing that finally matters. Everything above it is detail.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Not the recipe, not the cook’s reputation, not how it looks coming out of the oven.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Popularized by Bert Lance in the Carter administration. A working thing requires no examination of why it works.
Whatever works. Offered as a resolution rather than a shrug. It closes a debate about approach by declining to have one.
Don’t tell me, show me. An objection to the form of an answer rather than its content. Description is treated as insufficient in principle, whatever it describes.
Peirce, James and Dewey between them built the only philosophical school America originated, and its founding move was to test ideas by their consequences rather than their coherence. It shaped Progressive-era reform, the New Deal, and American legal thinking. The country’s one native philosophy is a philosophy of what works.
America produced one original school of philosophy, and it is named after practical consequence. In Pragmatism (1907) William James asked of any belief: what concrete difference will its being true make in anyone’s actual life? What, in short, is the truth’s cash-value in experiential terms?
He described the pragmatic method as looking away from first things, principles, categories and supposed necessities, and toward last things, fruits, consequences, facts.
And he put the conclusion as bluntly as it can be put: truth happens to an idea. It becomes true, is made true by events.
