Voice of the customer
An American business term for research feeding directly into decisions, with a formal methodology and a place in the product process. Controlling that channel is a genuine source of influence, and the competition to own it is real.
The star rating
American commerce runs on aggregated customer ratings, displayed next to the price on every listing. Quality is expressed as an average of opinions, alongside the number that would buy it.
The path to CEO
American chief executives come disproportionately from operations, finance and sales. The route runs through functions that carry a number and face outward, not through the functions that write the rules.
Justus von Liebig
Liebig found that plant growth is limited not by the total nutrients available but by whichever single nutrient is scarcest. Add more of everything else and nothing improves. Add the one that is missing and the crop grows.
The Law of the Minimum is a diagnostic principle disguised as agricultural chemistry. The problem has one cause, and treating the others is waste.
Consumer Reports
The American product testing organisation, founded in 1936, takes no advertising and publishes ratings alongside price. Its signature judgment is the Best Buy — not the best product, but the best product at its price.
The gap in the résumé
American hiring practice treats an unexplained period of unemployment as something requiring explanation, and career advice is written about how to account for it. Continuity of employment is read as evidence about the person.
A/B testing
Show half your users one version, half the other, and let the numbers decide. No argument, no theory, no meeting. The disagreement is resolved by running both and reading the result.
The Nielsen heuristics
Jakob Nielsen’s ten usability principles, published in 1994, became the standard American checklist for interface evaluation. Visibility of system status, user control, error prevention, recognition rather than recall. The list is about reducing what the user must hold in their head.
The two-week vacation
Two weeks is the common American starting allowance, rising with service to three or four. The German statutory minimum alone exceeds the American starting point, and most German collective agreements exceed it substantially — but this is a fact about American practice: the allowance is granted by the employer and begins low.
