Turf

Turf war. Land grab. Empire building. Not in my sandbox. American vocabulary for internal power struggle is territorial and about scope of control. None of it is about who writes the procedures.

Voice of the customer

An American business term for research feeding directly into decisions, with a formal methodology and a place in the product process. Controlling that channel is a genuine source of influence, and the competition to own it is real.

Compliance

An American corporate function with real authority in regulated industries, and a defensive posture nearly everywhere else. It is described as a check on the business rather than as part of it, and the phrasing gives away where the centre of gravity sits.

The reorg

American companies restructure frequently, and the restructuring is usually about who controls which market, product line or customer segment. The process documentation is rewritten afterwards to match. It follows the settlement rather than constituting it.

The path to CEO

American chief executives come disproportionately from operations, finance and sales. The route runs through functions that carry a number and face outward, not through the functions that write the rules.

Customer obsession

Amazon lists it first among its leadership principles: leaders start with the customer and work backwards. Placing it first is the argument. Whoever can speak credibly for the customer has the strongest claim in an American meeting.

Revenue and cost centers

American companies divide themselves into functions that generate revenue and functions that consume it, and the language is used openly in budget discussions. Being a cost center is a structural position, and everyone in one knows it.

The P&L

American organizations locate authority with whoever owns the profit and loss statement for a business unit. She owns the P&L is a complete statement about somebody’s standing. The number confers the power, and the number comes from the market.
