Standing still

If you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backward. Standing still is falling behind. Plateaued. Stuck in the same role. Career stagnation.

American vocabulary treats the absence of advancement as an active condition requiring diagnosis, not as a settled state.

The title

American job titles proliferate and are read carefully — associate, senior, staff, principal, director, vice president. Companies create levels partly so that people can be moved between them, and the title travels on the email signature and the LinkedIn profile.

Up or out

American law firms, consultancies and accounting firms run partnership tracks on which an associate who is not promoted within a defined period leaves. Standing still is not an available option — it is the definition of failure.

Better a secure job than a great career

Although the unemployment rate is lower than it has been for a long time, a secure job is the most important thing for German citizens. Good career opportunities, on the other hand, are far down the list of priorities.

A secure and permanent job is most important to Germans – even before nice colleagues and an attractive salary. This was the result of a survey on the quality of work in Germany commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Labor among around 5,000 employees.
