Every Train in the Plan

In August 1914, a military timetable took effect in Germany on 4 August at one minute past midnight and replaced the normal timetable. The route and destination of every transport had been fixed exactly in peacetime. The planning lay with the railway section of the Great General Staff, headed since 1912 by Wilhelm Groener. Each army corps needed about 140 trains. The main lines had a planned pause of four hours to absorb disruptions. A regional history journal explains the precision: in the German General Staff, man nichts dem Zufall überließ, nothing was left to chance.

One Formula for Seven Operas

Between 1977 and 2003, Karlheinz Stockhausen composed LICHT, light, a cycle of seven operas named after the days of the week. Together they last about 29 hours. The whole cycle is built on a single superformula of three melodies, one for each of the central characters, Michael, Eva and Luzifer. The formula defines the tonal centers and the durations of whole scenes. Each opera is composed from an elaborated form of its own day’s part of the formula.

Measured Art

In 1525, Albrecht Dürer published in Nuremberg his Underweysung der messung mit dem zirckel und richtscheyt, instruction in measurement with compass and ruler. It was the first comprehensive textbook of geometry in the German language, written for painters and craftsmen. His Vier Bücher von menschlicher Proportion, four books on human proportion, were printed in October 1528, five months after his death. The third book shows how the proportions of the human figure change according to mathematical rules.

Articulated, Not Heaped

In the Critique of Pure Reason, Immanuel Kant has a chapter on the architectonic of pure reason. There he writes: Ich verstehe unter einer Architektonik die Kunst der Systeme. (By an architectonic I understand the art of systems.) Kant describes a whole built from an idea: Das Ganze ist also gegliedert (articulatio) und nicht gehäuft (coacervatio). (The whole is therefore articulated and not heaped up.) And he adds: Die Idee bedarf zur Ausführung ein Schema, the idea needs a schema for its execution.

The Typically German Wish

Lutz Goebel has chaired the National Regulatory Control Council since 2022. In February 2025, Legal Tribune Online interviewed him. The interviewer recalled his criticism of the kräftezehrenden typisch deutschen Wunsch nach Einzelfallgerechtigkeit, the exhausting, typically German wish for justice in each individual case. Goebel said that municipal staff suffer under small-scale laws that are hard to understand. He proposed lump sums and thresholds below which small cases are not pursued. Wir können uns nicht noch mehr Berichtspflichten, Kontrollen und Beauftragte leisten. (We cannot afford even more reporting duties, controls and commissioners.)

Metropolis

Fritz Lang’s film Metropolis had its premiere in 1927. Production took 17 months, with 310 days and 60 nights of shooting, and used 620,000 meters of negative film. The set designer Otto Hunte said that one traffic effect alone took almost six weeks of minutiös genaue Arbeit, meticulously exact work. The budget was planned at 1.5 million Reichsmarks. The film cost about four times as much. The management of the studio, Ufa, felt blackmailed by Lang’s constant demands for more money.

Words for detail

Der Teufel steckt im Detail — the devil is in the detail, and in German it is a warning rather than an observation.

Ins Detail gehen — to go into the detail, said approvingly of a discussion that is doing its job.

Gründlich — going to the ground of a thing, the standard German word of praise for work.

Schlampig, oberflächlich, husch-husch — sloppy, superficial, hurry-hurry. Three dismissals, all of work that stopped before the detail.

Standardization

The German Institute for Standardization maintains tens of thousands of standards covering materials, processes, dimensions, testing, terminology and safety. A standard is a detail that has been settled once so that nobody has to settle it again, and Germany has settled a great many.

The land register

Das Grundbuch. The German land register records, for every parcel, the owner, the boundaries, the mortgages, the easements and the restrictions — maintained by the courts and legally authoritative. What is written there is what is true. The register is not evidence of the position. It is the position.

Network planning

Netzplantechnik. Network planning technique. German project management teaches critical path analysis under its own name, with its own DIN definitions, as part of engineering and business curricula. The dependencies between tasks are modelled explicitly before the work starts.
