The lifetime civil servant

German civil servants are appointed for life — Beamte auf Lebenszeit. Roughly 1.7 million people hold the status, and it cannot be ended except by criminal conviction or disciplinary proceedings. Teachers, police, tax officials, many university staff. In exchange the Beamter gives up the right to strike.

The state offers permanence as the consideration.

The vehicle inspection

Die Hauptuntersuchung. Every German car over three years old is inspected every two years. Roughly 30 million passenger cars pass through it. It has been mandatory since 1951.

The TÜV Report 2026, drawn from 9.5 million inspections between July 2024 and June 2025, found that 21.5 percent of vehicles had significant or dangerous defects.

Read that number the German way. One car in five was on the road with a serious fault, and the system found it before the fault found a person.

The settlement

The German settlement. Most civil and labour disputes end in one, and German judges actively propose terms rather than waiting for the parties to arrive at them. A judgment produces a winner. A Vergleich produces an agreement, and the system prefers the second.

The duty to inspect

Where both parties are merchants, German commercial law requires the buyer to examine goods immediately on delivery and to report any defect immediately — § 377 HGB.

Obvious defects must be reported within a day or two. Hidden ones immediately on discovery. Miss the deadline and the goods count as approved, and the buyer loses his warranty rights entirely.

The German customer is under a legal obligation to be attentive.

The precautionary principle

The precautionary principle is a German export. It arose as the Vorsorgeprinzip in German environmental law in the early 1970s and was written into the Federal Emission Protection Act of 15 March 1974.

It reached international law in 1987 at the North Sea conference, and was entrenched in 1992 as Principle 15 of the Rio Declaration, from where it passed into most international environmental conventions.

The principle holds that where serious or irreversible harm is possible, the absence of full scientific certainty is not a reason to wait.

Germany did not adopt an international norm about prevention. It wrote one and the world took it.

Payment falls due without asking

For monetary claims, a German debtor falls into default at the latest thirty days after the debt becomes due and the invoice arrives — without any reminder being sent. The provision is § 286 Abs. 3 BGB. The creditor is not required to chase. The obligation runs on its own clock.

Insured against everything

Germans carry insurance that has no obvious equivalent elsewhere. Haftpflichtversicherung, personal liability, held by a large majority of households. Rechtsschutzversicherung, legal expenses. Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, occupational disability. None of these is compulsory. All of them are normal.

Your day in court

The American phrase for the right to have a grievance heard, and it is used far outside the courtroom — in workplaces, schools, homeowner associations and disputes of every kind. The claim is procedural rather than substantive. It is not that you will win. It is that somebody with authority is obliged to listen to you before deciding.

Belonging to the company

Belonging-to-the-company. A single German noun for length of service, and it carries legal weight in notice periods, redundancy selection, severance calculations and pension entitlements. The word is not about time elapsed. It is about belonging, and the law treats the belonging as something that accrues.

Contracts must be kept

Pacta sunt servanda is quoted in German legal education as the foundation of contract law, and German civil law treats the binding force of agreement as a starting premise rather than as one consideration among several. An agreement is not a statement of current intention that both sides revisit. It is the thing that was settled.
