The retrospective

American software teams hold one at the end of every iteration: what worked, what did not, what changes next time. The process is treated as provisional by design. It is expected to be different in two weeks because the team will have learned something.

Evidence-based practice

American medicine reorganised itself around the phrase in the 1990s, and it spread to nursing, education, social work and policy. The argument was that established practice rests on authority and habit, and should rest on outcomes measured in trials. A whole profession accepted that its procedures had the wrong derivation.

Grounded theory

Glaser and Strauss published it in 1967: an American research method in which theory is built up from data rather than tested against it. The researcher is instructed not to begin with a hypothesis. The categories are supposed to emerge.

Six Sigma

Developed at Motorola in 1986 and adopted across American manufacturing and services. Its core cycle — Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control — begins with measurement of what is actually happening. The improvement is derived from the data, and the control phase exists to hold the derived process in place until the next measurement.

The playbook

An American football playbook is a compilation of what has worked, tested in practice and revised weekly. The word crossed into business intact. A playbook is not a manual derived from principle. It is a record of plays that succeeded.

Building codes after the fire

The Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire in 1911 killed 146 workers behind locked doors. New York’s fire and safety legislation followed directly, and much of the American building code tradition follows the same pattern. The rule about exits exists because of specific people who could not get out.

Written in blood

The phrase American pilots use of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Almost every rule traces to a crash. The NTSB investigates, issues findings, recommends, and the rule follows. The regulation is not derived from a theory of safe flight. It is derived from the accidents that already happened.

The common law

American law is built from decided cases. A court reaches a result on particular facts, that result binds later courts, and the rule emerges from the accumulation. Nobody wrote the rule first. It was extracted from a sequence of situations, and it changes when a new situation shows the extraction was incomplete.
