A Second Home

Chennai Super Kings were suspended from the Indian Premier League for two years over the betting and spot-fixing case of 2013. Their captain, M.S. Dhoni, played for Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 and 2017. In January 2018 CSK retained him for 15 crore rupees.

“A lot of people approached me. I can’t think of not coming back to CSK,” Dhoni said in Chennai. “It is a second home to me.” In 2021 the owner, N. Srinivasan, said: “There is no CSK without Dhoni and there is no Dhoni without CSK.”

Till the Last Day

Virat Kohli has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore since the first season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. On October 11, 2021, after his last match as the team’s captain, he said: “For me, loyalty matters and my commitment is with this franchise till the last day I play IPL.”

The Coca-Cola Account

In March 2001 the trade site agencyfaqs! reported why Lintas had not won the Coca-Cola advertising account in India. Coca-Cola wanted Lintas to move Kissan, a Hindustan Lever brand, to an affiliate agency. “HLL won’t agree,” the site wrote. The account went to McCann.

Lowe Lintas gave its own reason: “Unfortunately, this was not possible for reasons of conflict of interest with Hindustan Lever (HLL) brands.” The site added: “Lintas was historically a Unilever agency.”

Hereditary Patrons

In the jajmani system of village India, families who provided services were tied to patron families, the jajmans. Britannica describes the bond: “These relations are supposed to continue from one generation to the next.”

The tie was a duty of the family, not of one person. “The hereditary character allows for certain forms of bond labour, since it is the family obligation to serve its hereditary patrons,” Britannica adds.

Not a Single Dealer Left

Brijmohan Lall Munjal, who led Hero for decades, met every dealer before the company appointed them. Dealers called him their “guru, guide, mentor and father figure.” When Hero and Honda ended their partnership, many expected the dealer network to break apart. “Not a single dealer left the Munjals in spite of the doomsday projections,” wrote Bhupesh Bhandari in Business Standard after Munjal’s death in November 2015.

Bhandari added that Munjal “never let Hero MotoCorp (earlier Hero Honda) become a faceless and impersonal corporation.”

The Family Registers

In Haridwar, around 2,000 pandas, priests of the holy city, “preserve the lineages of their clients in the ‘Bahi khatas’,” the registers they keep. “The clientele of a particular panda is decided on the basis of the village, district and the state they come from,” DT Next reported in 2021.

Before written records, the pandas “used to memorise the names, clans and places of origin, and pass down the information orally to their next generations.”

Jaan-Pehchaan

Jaan-pehchaan means knowing people and being known by them. A study by Berger, Barnes, Konwar, Singh and colleagues surveyed managers at more than 300 companies in India.

It describes three parts of the practice: pehchaan, recognition, len-den, give and take, and bharosa, trust. Together they shaped how satisfied companies were with their business relationships and how long they planned to keep them.
