The prescribed cure

A German physician can prescribe a Kur — a multi-week stay at a spa or rehabilitation clinic, substantially funded by the health or pension insurance. Exhaustion is treated as a medical condition with an institutional remedy, and the time away does not come out of holiday entitlement.

Parental leave

Elternzeit. German parents may take up to three years of leave per child, with the job protected and dismissal prohibited for the duration. It may be split, shared between parents, and partly deferred until the child is eight.

Taking evidence

Das Beweisverfahren. German courts take evidence in a structured process — documents, witnesses, court-appointed experts — and a case may be adjourned repeatedly while it runs. Speed is not a value the procedure optimises for.

The Magnuson-Moss Act

The 1975 federal warranty statute requires that consumer product warranties be written in plain language, be labelled full or limited, and be available for inspection before purchase. The law regulates the promise rather than the product.

The Federal Leave Act

Das Bundesurlaubsgesetz. The Federal Leave Act, in force since 1963, sets a statutory minimum of twenty-four working days of annual leave on a six-day week. That is the floor. Most German collective agreements provide substantially more, and the statutory minimum functions as a level nobody works at.

The waiver

American processes come with a documented path around them — a variance in a building code, an exception request in procurement, a waiver in a grant programme. The exception is not a failure of the process. It is part of the process, with its own form.

Bureaucracy

In American usage the word is an accusation, and it is applied to private companies as readily as to government. Elsewhere the word can describe a form of organisation. In American English it describes a failure of one.
