German banks, insurers, energy suppliers and public bodies maintain ombudsman schemes: free, binding on the company up to a threshold, and available before any court is approached. A complaint has somewhere to go that is not a lawsuit.

The playbook
An American football playbook is a compilation of what has worked, tested in practice and revised weekly. The word crossed into business intact. A playbook is not a manual derived from principle. It is a record of plays that succeeded.
Can you just
The two words that open the American scope conversation, and the change-order literature quotes them directly as the thing to watch for. Can you just is a request framed as a small one. The framing is what makes it hard to refuse and what makes it worth a document.
Unlimited PTO
A number of American companies have replaced fixed vacation allowances with unlimited policies. Research and reporting repeatedly find that employees under them take less leave rather than more, because nobody can say what is normal.
Fail fast
Two words, and the logic is compressed into them. Failure is assumed. The only variable worth managing is how quickly it arrives, because a slow failure costs more than a fast one to reach the same information.
EDGAR
Every filing every US public company makes to the Securities and Exchange Commission is published on a free public database. Annual reports, quarterly results, executive compensation, insider share sales, material events. No subscription, no registration, no reason required. A competitor, a journalist or a private individual reads the same file on the same day.
Kelley Blue Book
The standard American reference for used car values gives several figures for the same vehicle: trade-in value, private party value, dealer retail, certified pre-owned. Not a price. Four prices, depending on who is buying from whom — and each is presented as a range.
Just checking in
Just circling back. Following up on this. Any update? Bumping this to the top of your inbox. Did you get a chance to look at this?
Five standard American formulations for asking whether an agreement is still an agreement, and every one of them apologises in the asking.
They are sent routinely, received without offence, and answered. Nobody treats the question as doubt about the person, because everybody is sending them.
The improvement plan
The Performance Improvement Plan is a formal American HR instrument, and its stated purpose is development. Everyone in an American workplace understands it differently. Being placed on one is widely read as the beginning of an exit, and employees respond by looking for another job.
The instrument exists to separate the work from the person. Nobody reads it that way.
The one-page memo
American organisations enforce length limits on decision documents — the one-pager, the two-page brief, the executive summary capped at a page.
The constraint is on the analysis, not on the decision. A question that cannot be put in a page is treated as one that has not yet been thought through, rather than as one that needs more room.
