A standard German compound with no clean English equivalent — value for money is close and carries a different logic, because it asks what you got for what you paid rather than whether the two correspond. The German word treats price and performance as two quantities in a defined relationship. A good ratio can be expensive.
Quality assurance
Qualitätssicherung. German manufacturers run quality assurance as a function with its own department, its own reporting line and its own authority to stop production. The person who can halt the line does not report to the person responsible for output.

The trade press
Germany sustains an unusually dense Fachzeitschrift sector — periodicals for individual industries, trades and professional specialisms, many published for decades. The reader is assumed to want depth in one field rather than breadth across several.
The list price
Der Listenpreis. German suppliers publish price lists, and the list price is the price. Deviating from it requires a reason that can be stated: quantity, contract term, a documented specification change. The list is not an opening position. It is the answer to the question.
The crafts ordinance
Die Handwerksordnung. German law reserves fifty-three trades to those holding a master qualification, on the stated ground that improper execution endangers health, safety or life. Quality in these trades is not a market outcome. It is a condition of being permitted to work.
Justus von Liebig
Liebig found that plant growth is limited not by the total nutrients available but by whichever single nutrient is scarcest. Add more of everything else and nothing improves. Add the one that is missing and the crop grows.
The Law of the Minimum is a diagnostic principle disguised as agricultural chemistry. The problem has one cause, and treating the others is waste.
Examined by the trade
The journeyman and master examinations — Gesellenprüfung and Meisterprüfung — are taken before a chamber committee, not before the employer, and both have written, practical and oral parts. The assessment of competence is removed from the workplace entirely and given to the trade.
The quality officer
The German Qualitätsbeauftragter has authority independent of production management and, in regulated industries, may halt release. The person who defines the process is deliberately placed outside the line that would benefit from bending it.
The free gift ordinance
Die Zugabeverordnung. The companion law, from 1932, limited free gifts with a purchase. The example used at the time: to stop people buying a bicycle because it came with a kilo of coffee. Repealed on the same day as the Rabattgesetz, and for the same reason — the EU e-commerce directive made it untenable.
