In 2024, 12.7 percent of the teachers newly hired on permanent contracts in Germany came in as Seiteneinsteiger, side-door entrants, without teacher training. In March 2026, the Stifterverband published recommendations on this route. It called for basic courses before the new teachers take their first class, and for qualification and mentoring alongside the job.
