Tea from Geneva

J.R.D. Tata flew on Air India often and sent detailed observations to its management after his flights. In a note of 1951 he wrote: “The tea served on board from Geneva is, without exaggeration, indistinguishable in colour from the coffee.” He asked the station manager in Geneva to look into it, and added: “I want that the passengers who travel with us do not have occasion to complain.”

Full Moral Responsibility

In July 2009 a section of a Delhi Metro bridge under construction collapsed, killing five workers and an engineer. E. Sreedharan, the managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, offered to resign. He said he had “to take full moral responsibility.” The Delhi government rejected his resignation, because it needed him to finish the Metro projects on time, Business Standard reported.

The Head Examiner

A marking scheme of 2025 from the Central Board of Secondary Education, for a class 10 board exam paper, tells its evaluators: “Marking Scheme should be strictly adhered to and religiously followed.” On the first day of evaluation, “the Head-Examiner must go through the first five answer books evaluated by each evaluator.” Further answer books are given out only when no significant variation is found.

Best Left to Academics

In Ran Vijay Singh v. State of Uttar Pradesh, decided on December 11, 2017, the Supreme Court set out how courts should handle disputes over exam results. It allowed re-evaluation only where the rules permit it or where a material error is clearly shown.

Otherwise, “The Court should not at all re-evaluate or scrutinize the answer sheets of a candidate.” Academic matters “are best left to academics.” In case of doubt, “the benefit should go to the examination authority rather than to the candidate.”

Ready for the Stage

The dance historian Ashish Mohan Khokar writes that in earlier times “a guru decided when his or her ward – shishya – was ready for the stage.” A parent wrote in Deccan Herald: “We were told by our daughter’s guru that she was ready for her arangetram in 2019.”
