Not by Gray Hair

Verse 2.136 of the Manusmriti names five grounds of respect: wealth, kin, age, deeds and learning. In one modern translation, “each succeeding factor is weightier.”

Verse 2.156 says: Na tena vriddho bhavati yenasya palitam shirah. “One does not become old merely because one’s head is gray. Rather, he who, though young, is learned in scriptures, him the gods consider to be an elder.”

Not in Our Vocabulary

In January 2021 India beat Australia by three wickets at the Gabba in Brisbane, chasing 328, and won the Test series 2-1. Australia had not lost a Test at the Gabba since 1988. India played without Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Washington Sundar and T. Natarajan had come to Australia as net bowlers. Rishabh Pant made 89 not out.

Earlier in the series India had been all out for 36. “To come here and play the way we have despite having our main bowlers injured, is phenomenal,” the coach, Ravi Shastri, said. “Feeling defeated is one thing but giving up is not in our vocabulary.”

The Pad Machine

Arunachalam Muruganantham built a machine that makes low-cost sanitary pads. “It all started because I wanted to create a good sanitary napkin for my wife,” he told NPR. He tested the pads himself, using a bladder filled with animal blood. NPR compared his machine to a kitchen blender.

Imported machines cost about 3.5 crore rupees. The sources differ on the cost of his. Wikipedia gives 65,000 rupees. NPR gives about $1,500. In 2016 he received the Padma Shri. The 2018 film Pad Man is based on his story.

Hospital Beds on Rails

On March 30, 2020, the Railway Board ordered the conversion of passenger coaches into isolation coaches for Covid-19 patients. It planned 5,000 coaches at first and up to 20,000 in all. Only sleeper coaches without air conditioning were to be used.

In each cabin, both middle berths were to be removed. A toilet was to be turned into a bathing room. “Approximately 6500 hospital beds are being made ready,” The Tribune reported.

Those Who Try

Lahron se darkar nauka paar nahin hoti, koshish karne walon ki kabhi haar nahin hoti. The boat that fears the waves does not cross. Those who try are never defeated.

The lines are widely quoted as the work of Harivansh Rai Bachchan. They were written by Sohanlal Dwivedi. Amitabh Bachchan, Harivansh Rai’s son, had to correct the attribution on his Facebook page, YourStory reported.

No Leave

In 2023 the Prime Minister’s Office answered a request under the Right to Information Act about Narendra Modi’s leave. “The Prime Minister is on duty all the time,” the reply said. “No leave has been availed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi since taking office.”

The request came from Prafful P. Sarda of Pune. Business Today reported the reply on September 4, 2023.

The Sun’s Credentials

In 1893 Swami Vivekananda wanted to speak at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. He had no credentials as a delegate. John Henry Wright, a professor of Greek at Harvard, gave him a letter of introduction.

According to accounts of his life, Wright told him: “To ask you, Swami, for your credentials is like asking the sun to state its right to shine.” In the letter he is said to have written: “Here is a man who is more learned than all our learned professors put together.”

Both lines come from later accounts, and the wording of the first varies between them.
