German children learn to ride a bicycle in traffic at school. The Radfahrausbildung, cycling training, usually ends in fourth grade with the Fahrradprüfung, the cycling test. In Bavaria, an administrative notice of 15 May 2003 sets out the order. Children first practice in a Schonraum, a protected space at school. At youth traffic schools, traffic instructors from the police take over the practical training. The training ends with a test in theory and practice. Only then do the children ride in real traffic around the school, in small groups of about five. The notice states that taking part in the exercise in real traffic requires, as a rule, passing the test. Children who failed should do that session in the protected space instead, if staff and time allow. Children who pass receive a kind of cycling license, the Fahrradführerschein. It has no legal force. The automobile club ADAC recommends that children ride alone in traffic only after the test.
