Severance by formula

German severance — Abfindung — is customarily calculated at half a month’s salary per year of service, and the formula is used in settlements and named in statute for certain dismissals. Length of service converts directly into money at a rate everyone knows before the conversation starts.

The IPO price range

An American company going public announces a range, then builds a book of investor interest, then prices the offering — sometimes above the range, sometimes below. The company does not know what it is worth. It runs a process to find out.

The savings rate

Sparquote. German household saving rates run consistently high by international comparison and rose further during periods of uncertainty rather than falling. The reserve grows when it looks most likely to be needed.

Price discrimination

American economics teaches it as a legitimate and often efficient practice: charging different customers different prices for the same good according to what each will pay. Student discounts, senior rates, coupons, loyalty pricing, regional pricing. The practice is normal enough that most Americans do not notice they are inside it.

Saving before borrowing

Der Bausparvertrag. A German savings contract taken out years before a house is bought: you save to a fixed target, and only then does the loan become available. The instrument requires the saving phase before the borrowing phase. The contingency is built into the sequence.

The Great Resignation

American quit rates reached record levels in 2021 and 2022, and the phenomenon was widely attributed to a reassessment of what work should cost a person. It was expressed as millions of individual departures rather than as any change in law or policy.

Payment falls due without asking

For monetary claims, a German debtor falls into default at the latest thirty days after the debt becomes due and the invoice arrives — without any reminder being sent. The provision is § 286 Abs. 3 BGB. The creditor is not required to chase. The obligation runs on its own clock.

Insured against everything

Germans carry insurance that has no obvious equivalent elsewhere. Haftpflichtversicherung, personal liability, held by a large majority of households. Rechtsschutzversicherung, legal expenses. Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, occupational disability. None of these is compulsory. All of them are normal.

Chapter 11

American bankruptcy law lets a company reorganize and continue rather than liquidate. The business keeps trading while it restructures. Iteration written into commercial law: the failure is a state to pass through, not an ending.

The ticker

American financial markets publish a continuously changing price for every listed security, and the process is called price discovery. The word discovery is doing the work. The price is not set and then announced. It is found, repeatedly, and it is never final.
