The Secured Card

An American who does not qualify for a regular credit card can start with a secured card, backed by a cash deposit. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains: “With most of these cards, your credit line starts out small.”

“As you show you can pay on time, your credit limit may be raised and you may have your deposit refunded.” The bureau also defines the test. “On time” means the payment gets to the company by the day the bill is due.

Graded and Progressive Responsibility

A new American doctor has the degree but not yet the independence. In its 2014 program requirements the accrediting body for residency programs, the ACGME, called the rule “graded and progressive responsibility” and described it as “one of the core tenets of American graduate medical education.”

Residents received more as they “demonstrate growth in their ability to care for patients.” Supervisory roles and conditional independence were a privilege, and they “must be assigned by the program director and faculty members.”

The vocabulary of results

Results-oriented. A standard phrase on an American résumé. The claim is not that the person works hard or knows the field, but that they can be judged by what came out.

Deliverables. American project language names the output as the unit of work. Not tasks, not effort, not hours. The thing handed over.

Track record. Not qualifications, not references, not what someone believes about themselves. What has already been produced, and can be pointed at.

Best practice. Methods are adopted from a competitor, another industry, another country, on the grounds that they work. There is no loyalty in the concept — the practice earns its place by outcome and loses it the same way.

Return on investment. Every expenditure becomes a candidate for the calculation, including training, meetings, research and attention. The question is not whether the thing is good. It is what came back.
