“If you take on a lot, you can also fail a lot.” Mark Twain (1835-1910)
Definition of Plan
MerriamWebster online states four definitions for the term plan. Duden, the famous German dictionary, offers almost the exact same definitions. We’re interested in the second definition: “a detailed formulation of a program of action.”
1. A drawing or diagram drawn on a plane: such as a top or horizontal view of an object, a large-scale map of a small area.
2. A method for achieving an end, an often customary method of doing something, a detailed formulation of a program of action.
3. An orderly arrangement of parts of an overall design or objective.
4. A detailed program (as for payment or the provision of some service), i.e. pension plan.
sharpening the axe
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” – Abraham Lincoln
No president had to face as great a challenge as Abraham Lincoln. Never neglect the time and effort necessary for due diligence before action.
energy to wish
“It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
good fortune
“Good fortune is what happens when opportunity meets with planning.” – Thomas Edison
not quite enough time
“To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time.” – Leonard Bernstein
Compensation
Although compensation is important to Germans, it is only one of several factors which motivate them. Nor is it the most important. Germans simply want to be compensated fairly for their work.
Subject Matter
Americans want to work in subject matter areas which offer solid compensation, a clear path for advancement, and increasing opportunities and options. The American economy, therefore American companies, value the generalist more than the specialist.
Impersonal vs. Personal
Americans do not separate the personal from the professional. Business is always personal. It is both legitimate and effective to appeal to emotions when negotiating.
Firm vs. Flexible
Americans consider every agreement as renegotiable. Everything is in flux. Parameters change. Contractual parties are always free to renegotiate.
