Dangerously Modified

On September 28, 2022, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the authorities in Haryana to act against jugaad vehicles plying in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. The order included impounding them. The Tribune reported it as action against “illegal and dangerously modified” vehicles.

In 2025 the same court heard an accident claim involving “a ‘jugaad’ vehicle (car without registration),” LiveLaw reported.

Leave the Chalta Hai Attitude

On August 15, 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort. He asked the country to give up a habit. His office posted: “We have to leave this ‘Chalta Hai’ attitude. We have to think of ‘Badal Sakta Hai’- this attitude will help us as a nation: PM”

Chalta hai means it will do. Badal sakta hai means it can change.

More Than Terrorism

On September 18, 2018, a bench of the Supreme Court of India, Justices Madan B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta, took note of 3,597 deaths in pothole-related accidents in 2017. Business Standard reported that the court described the situation as “frightening.”

In December 2018 the court returned to the subject. Scroll reported that 14,926 people had died in pothole accidents between 2013 and 2017. The court said: “Reports say that more people have died due to accident caused by potholes than the deaths in terrorists attacks.”

Reopened Without a Certificate

On October 30, 2022, the suspension bridge in Morbi, Gujarat, collapsed. Reports give 135 or 141 deaths. The bridge had reopened four days earlier, after about six months of repair work. The company Oreva had been given the bridge for operation and maintenance for 15 years. A municipal official, Sandeepsinh Zala, said that the municipality “had not yet issued any fitness certificate.”

In February 2023 a special investigation team reported that 22 of the 49 wires in one cable were corroded, Scroll wrote. According to Reuters, the team found that “the main cables were not inspected or replaced.”

Fifteen Minutes

Indian Railways counts a train as on time if it reaches its last station within 15 minutes of the timetable. Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee examined this in a report presented to the Lok Sabha on February 4, 2026. The Tribune quoted it: “The extra threshold of 15 minutes is too large.”

By that measure, punctuality was 90.48 percent in 2021-22 and 73.62 percent in 2023-24, ThePrint reported. The committee called the method misleading, because punctuality is measured only at the terminating station and delays on the way are not counted.

Good Governance Day

In January 1997 Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda laid the foundation stone of the Bogibeel bridge over the Brahmaputra in Assam. Construction began in 2002.

On December 25, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the bridge to the nation. The date was the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, observed as Good Governance Day.

Eye Surgery on an Assembly Line

In 1976 Dr. G. Venkataswamy, known as Dr. V, retired at 58 and founded Aravind Eye Hospitals, starting with an eleven-bed hospital. In Aravind’s own account, “Dr. V drew inspiration from McDonalds and designed an assembly-line system.”

The same account reports: “Four of our doctors assisted by twelve nurses could do about one hundred cataract operations in one day.” Aravind says it has performed more than 11.6 million surgeries.

The Henry Ford of Heart Surgery

In 2009 the Wall Street Journal called Dr. Devi Shetty “The Henry Ford of Heart Surgery.” At his 1,000-bed Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital, 42 cardiac surgeons performed 3,174 bypass operations in 2008.

“Japanese companies reinvented the process of making cars. That’s what we’re doing in health care,” Shetty told the newspaper.

Zero Defect, Zero Effect

In his first Independence Day speech, on August 15, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave Indian industry a slogan. “Your policy should be ‘zero defect, zero effect’,” he said, in the words of the Press Trust of India.

On October 18, 2016, Modi launched the ZED certification scheme. When a ZED drive for small enterprises was launched in April 2022, “more than 1800 MSMEs had already registered and taken the ZED pledge” within a few hours, the Free Press Journal reported.

It Will Get Done

Ho jayega. It will get done. HP India built an advertising campaign for small businesses around the phrase. The trade site BestMediaInfo called it “that typical Indian expression.” HP India’s chief marketing officer, Prashant Jain, described the campaign as “a celebration of the dependability of the Indian small business owner.”
