For the Germans, planning is absolutely crucial for success. A good plan provides structure. It ensures cohesion and stability. Well thought-out planning reduces risk.
What Goes on in a Perfectionist’s Brain
Many people see perfectionism as essential for success. After all, setting high standards and achieving big goals can feel very rewarding.
Researchers at the University of Cologne wanted to get a better sense of perfectionism at the neurobiological level.
Not only that, high Personal Standard Perfectionism scorers’ brain activity also showed a slowing-down process after they made errors, which could allow them to learn from their mistakes and eventually correct course.
Contingency
Because Germans believe in discipline – in sticking to a plan – they plan for less unforeseen circumstances. Instead, they build in room for quick adjustments based on the situation on the ground.
Firm vs. Flexible
Germans believe that a plan can only fulfill its purpose if it is adhered to. “Why make a plan if you have no intention of executing it?” They do not let changing parameters throw them off balance easily.
Degree of Detail
The Germans are very detail-oriented. Their plans are highly detailed. The Germans tend to plan from A to Z. And they prefer to plan well in advance before they begin the execution.
Short Mid Long
The Germans plan for the medium to long term. Short-term action cannot be properly planned. That is almost a contradiction in terms. Short-term planning is often not worth the time, effort and investment.
