In June 2011 the Pew Research Center reported that “the average Facebook user has 229 Facebook friends.” The survey was conducted over the November 2010 elections. Pew also asked who these friends were. Twenty-two percent were people from high school. Twelve percent were extended family. Ten percent were coworkers.
Only 7 percent were people the user had never met in person.
