In May 1998 India carried out the nuclear tests known as Pokhran-II. The project employed 75 scientists and “progressed in secrecy.” A select group took part in the detonation, and all of them had to wear army uniforms.
The shafts had code names. The thermonuclear device was placed in a shaft called White House, and the fission bomb in one called Taj Mahal.
