American organizations run a rhythm of them: weekly team updates, monthly reports, quarterly reviews, daily notes. The cadence is the point rather than the content. The system assumes that information will stop moving unless something scheduled makes it move.
meetings
The DRI
Directly Responsible Individual. Apple’s internal practice attaches a single name to every item on a meeting agenda, and the name is visible to everyone. American project management more broadly insists on one accountable person per item, and the phrase single throat to choke is used without embarrassment.
The exit interview
A formal conversation held on the way out, partly to learn why the person is leaving and partly to extract what they know. The timing is the point: the attempt to capture the knowledge begins after the decision to leave has been made.
Action items
The American meeting produces action items, and a meeting that produces none is described as having gone nowhere. Not conclusions, not understandings, not positions. Items — countable, assigned, with a name next to each.
The stand-up
The daily stand-up exists so that nobody sits down, because sitting down lengthens the meeting. The furniture is arranged to prevent deliberation.
The meeting record
The German meeting record is not a list of decisions. A proper Protokoll records what was raised, what was argued, who objected and on what grounds, and then what was resolved.
It is circulated, corrected, and approved at the next meeting as its own agenda item.
Six months later the question is not only what was decided but why. The document is built to answer the second.
So what?
The standard American challenge to a presented finding, asked openly and without hostility in meetings. The question is not whether the finding is true. It is what follows from it being true, and a finding with no answer to the question has not earned the time.
The rules of procedure
German bodies from the Bundestag to a works council operate under a written Verfahrensordnung governing who may put items on the agenda, in what order, and how a decision is taken. Control of the rules of procedure is understood as control of what can be decided.
The talking-out
Die Aussprache. A talking-out. The German word for the conversation in which a difficulty is worked through between the people involved. It is arranged, it is expected to take a while, and it happens without spectators.
The promotion cycle
American companies run promotions on an annual or semi-annual calendar, with nomination packets, calibration meetings and published levels. Advancement is a scheduled institutional event with a process attached.
