In 1876 Thomas Edison built a laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. He promised “a minor invention every ten days and a big thing every six months or so.”
The promise was not about inspiration. The lab had machinists, experimenters, and a stock of materials. Trial was organized as routine. More than 400 patents came out of the lab in six years.
