The joint rules of procedure of the federal ministries set a standard for every draft law. Section 42 says: Gesetzentwürfe müssen sprachlich richtig und möglichst für jedermann verständlich gefasst sein. Draft laws must be correct in their language and, as far as possible, understandable to everyone. The Federal Ministry of Justice has its own editorial team for legal language, the Redaktionsstab Rechtssprache. Its main aim is a text that is not only correct but understandable. Under the Bundestag’s own rules, the committee in charge of a bill can also ask a language team based at the Bundestag to check it.
