In 1943 Ayn Rand published The Fountainhead. Its hero is an architect named Howard Roark. His designs are unconventional. He is expelled from school and fired from firms for refusing to compromise.
Rand’s stated theme was “individualism versus collectivism, not in politics, but in man’s soul.” The book became a bestseller with millions of readers.
