In November 2021, Lincoln Riley left the University of Oklahoma to become head football coach at USC. He was the first Oklahoma coach since 1946 to leave for another college job. On February 1, 2022, Oklahoma’s quarterback Caleb Williams said he would transfer to USC.
“Getting to know Coach Riley and gaining familiarity with his offense definitely played a part in my selection,” Williams said. Other Oklahoma players, among them Mario Williams and Latrell McCutchin, also followed Riley.
