On December 31, 1953, during negotiations with India, Zhou Enlai received the Indian government delegation in Beijing. He put forward five principles for the first time: mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit (平等互利), and peaceful coexistence. They became known as the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
