Against the Party Line

In 1985 the 52nd Amendment added the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India. Under it, a member of a legislature is disqualified if he “votes or abstains from voting in such House contrary to any direction issued by the political party” to which he belongs, without its prior permission.

The vote does not cost the member his seat if the party condones it within fifteen days.
