Good Design Is Unobtrusive

Gutes Design ist unaufdringlich. Good design is unobtrusive. This is the fifth of the ten principles of good design by Dieter Rams, who led the design team at Braun for more than 30 years.

The explanation reads: Produkte, die einen Zweck erfüllen, sind wie Werkzeuge. Products that serve a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be neutral and restrained, um Raum für die Selbstdarstellung des Nutzers zu lassen, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.
