The Sacrifice Bunt

In a sacrifice bunt, a baseball batter taps the ball on purpose so that a runner can advance. The batter is usually thrown out at first base. Sacrifice is also the everyday word for giving something up for the team.

The official scorer still protects the batter’s record. Under the official scoring rules, a successful sacrifice does not count as a time at bat, so it does not lower his batting average. It goes into his record as a sacrifice. Eddie Collins holds the career record with 512 sacrifice hits.

The scorer must also judge the batter’s intent. If he was really bunting for a hit, the scorer charges him with a time at bat.
