“It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” This line is often attributed to President Harry Truman. No evidence from Truman’s lifetime shows that he said it. The earliest link to Truman seems to come from the journalist Hugh Sidey, writing in Time in November 1988.
Ronald Reagan kept a small plaque on his Oval Office desk with a similar line: “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he does not mind who gets the credit.” Quote Investigator traced the idea to a diary entry of September 21, 1863. In it, Mountstuart Grant Duff recorded the words of an English Jesuit, Father Strickland.
Even this saying about giving up credit is usually credited to a famous name.
