As an American in Germany 30+ years I’ve grown weary of hearing and reading the Germans market their products and services with “Made in Germany.”
Simply too often. And too proudly. As if everything they ever do as a people is of world-class quality. Perhaps it’s my boredom with the phrase. Perhaps it is not true in each and every case. Or perhaps it is, and I am envious.
Frankly, far more interesting than any one person’s sensibilities is the history behind “Made in Germany.” As an historian by academic training I found this story fascinating.
And surprising. Who would have thought that there was ever a time when the German people produced anything that was not top quality? And the Germans as copycats! Who would have guessed that?
