Sie or Du

“As non-Germans we understand that Germans have the formal you (Sie) and the informal you (Du). And we observe how our German colleagues use Sie or Du depending on which other Germans they are interacting with: boss, colleague, customer, supplier, etc. We know that Sie and Du signal significant different things in those working relationships, but we have not idea what they signal. Please explain it to us.”
